This novel strays from King’s popular and terrifying – don’t turn out the lights and hide under the bed- horror tales. It is based on time travel and a tantalizing theme of love, loss, friendship, and saving the world from sure catastrophe.

Time travel novels have seemingly been “done to death”, but King truly makes the concept as new and refreshing as possible. The reader follows high school teacher Jake Epping through time travel trial and error, as he goes back to the 50′s to ultimately attempt to stop the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Along the way, he rights some wrongs in other people’s lives, and has to start the whole process over again as he makes mistakes along the way. He finds friendship, true love, and a darker side of him that he never knew existed. He also learns that starting over and righting the wrongs in the world is not always the best or most honorable thing to do, and this has been his biggest lesson.
King leads us, his “constant readers”, to not only imagine a world of time travel and do-overs, but to contemplate what the world would be like if things had turned out differently back in our own world history. He has an amazing gift for seamlessly meshing the old and new, the good and bad, and the true and fictitious. Although this isn’t a typical King novel that will leave you with phobias you never knew you had, it is a creative and ingenious masterpiece of time and space that will leave you, the reader, contemplating a few of your own do-overs. This novel can and does rank with the best of King’s work.
